Here Austin is getting an autographed basketball from Steve Alford, University of Iowa head basketball coach and former Hoop Shoot champion. Thisyears hoopshoot will take place at the Hyper Center on the Morningside Campus on Dec. 5th. Registration is at 8:30 am and we will start at 9:00 am. There will be a lunch to follow down at the Elks Lodge at 1001 Triview Ave.

Summer Camp

Every year our Lodge sends a young boy or girl to camp at Camp Foster. The camp is for kids up to the age of 16. We only send 1 each year, but if you know of a child who may need a break from their parents, or parents that need a break from their child, let one of the officers know. The deadline is July 31st every year, but the sooner the better. Eligibility is based partly on financial need.

Red Ribbon Week

After Tuesday night and a few phone calls today we are at:

17500 ribbons

15855 ribbon stickers

9750 bookmarks

5725 coloring books

5700 parenting brochures

About 4000 misc brochures

We served 41 Schools in 5 school districts in 3 states and 4 counties.

Dan Lewis going to attend the youth rally for the Neighborhood Youth Coalition and we will be represented at the Red Ribbon Week Kick Off celebration at Long Lines Family Center on Monday evening.

All of this with being under budget and with about an $800.00 cost to our lodge.

Thanks to the matching money from the Iowa Elks Assn. for the Red Ribbons and the materials from The Grand Lodge of The Benevolent and Protective Order Of Elks.

This a classic example of the good deeds we do as Elks, and our community involvement. Also a good example of what the Elks National Foundation is about as they fund both the Elks National Drug Awareness Program and the Iowa Elks Drug Awareness program.

A Big Thanks to Sioux City Elks for the support and funds they allow for our Sioux City program

Thanks to Ken Lillie, Bob Gant, Dan Lewis and Steve McDonald for your help.

ELKS DRUG AWARENESS PROGRAM

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Elks Drug Awareness Program is to promote constructive and cooperative approaches to the prevention of the use of illicit substances by the youth of the United States of America. This will be accomplished through education of students and parents, and by assisting scholastic institutions with programs and materials. Sioux City Lodge works in cooperation with the schools in our area to distribute informational materials and materials with an anti drug message.

Last year we distributed in excess of 80,000 pieces of literature and ribbons.

Hunter Safety

Every year several of our members offer a certified Hunter Safety course at the Lodge. This is done around the first week of October. This course is required for anyone born after January 1, 1972 that is an Iowa resident or January 1, 1967 and is a non resident and applies for a hunting license in Iowa. You must be at least 12 years old to enroll in the class. Classes this year are Oct. 4-6th.

Dictionaries for 3rd Graders

For the last 3 years we have been participating in the Dictionary Program. We started out giving dictionaries to third graders in Sioux City Public Schools. We have since expanded that to include all schools in Sioux City, Sergeant Bluff, Dakota City, and South Sioux City. Last year we dontated over 1488 dictionaries to our local kids valued at over $2600.00. (2005 Article)
